“I REALLY enjoyed supporting Foreigner in Germany with my old originals band in front of 3,000 people!”

Who are Acoustic Captain?

Acoustic Captain are made up of the 4 talented members of Captain Obvious – an in-demand, London based all-electric wedding, party and function band. Their acoustic outfit Acoustic Captain still has the same great mix of classic and contemporary songs and infectious live show antics but with an acoustic twist and the option of the band roaming while they perform meaning they can entertain in all corners of your venue! It’s a unique experience and I highly recommend you hire them and watch it unfold at your event! Let’s find out all about these fantastic and experienced professional musicians in today’s showcase, shall we?

Say hey to Ed!

Ed the drummer and percussionist from Acoustic Captain and took some time out of his busy schedule to chat with me and give me all the insider info on his life and his band.

What’s a typical working day for you?

Getting up early, about 8, to start working at 9. I tackle whatever admin needs doing and emails that need responding too. Then I work on my other musical projects, which for me currently include a YouTube channel and recording and producing an album of original music.

That sounds fun! What do you love about performing in Acoustic Captain?

I have to say that hanging out with my friends is the best bit. We’re really close and get on really well and we always have fun when we hang out or perform together. And of course, playing with such talented musicians, who are pushing me to be at the top of my game daily is a wonderful thing!

Why did you choose to become a musician?

Acoustic-Captain-Band-For-Hire-Laughing

Performing music is something I’ve done since I was 11 and there’s no feeling like it. Being my own boss and in control of my own career have always appealed to me too. I’m fortunate to have turned my hobby into a job so I don’t feel like I’ve worked a day in my life, haha!

What are the best and worst aspects of being a full-time musician?

Oh man, I think this question requires its own dedicated podcast, haha. The best bits are working with talented people, working with close friends, having fun, the flexibility of working when and how you want. The downsides are no sick pay, no holiday pay and no income security (as famously highlighted by the Covid-19 lockdowns).

Yep, I totally agree with all that. What’s been your all-time favourite show?

I enjoy ALL the shows with Acoustic Captain, and there’s too many to select just one. In terms of other gigs, I REALLY enjoyed supporting Foreigner in Germany with my old originals band in front of 3,000 people!

What’s been your most embarrassing moment during a show?

HA! Great question. I was trying to show off at the end of a show in Brighton, I stood up on my drum stool with the idea of jumping off for one final big hit at the end of the set. The stool tipped over and I fell off it into the side of the drumkit (which hurt) in a very anti-climactic, un-rock’n’roll fashion.

Hehe! What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever witnessed at one of your shows?

I definitely can’t mention some of them, but we had a horn section from Holland randomly and spontaneously join us on stage one night to play Superstition by Stevie Wonder. They absolutely smashed it.

What’s your favourite song to perform?

Acoustic-Captain-Suits-Band-For-Hire

Haha, everyone in the band would give you very different answers I’m sure, but mine as a drummer has to be Sweet Child of Mine, Mr Brightside and our very own Acoustic Captain medleys of songs. These usually go down really well with the audience and keep the set moving along well.

Which song is a guaranteed dance floor filler?

Shut Up & Dance has to be a modern classic.

What are Acoustic Captains future plans?

To continue gigging, improving as a band, and entertaining more people.

If you could do anything, what would you do if you weren’t a musician?

Be a YouTuber…

What’s your favourite food?

Burritos and fresh Mexican food!

What’s your ultimate holiday destination?

Somewhere with lots to do and explore, I’m not one for sunbathing.

What’s your ideal way to spend a day off?

Away from my phone and computer! Exploring places, eating good food and relaxing. Contrary to popular belief, some musicians actually work REALLY hard, haha, so I definitely need downtime.

Haha, we do work hard! If you had the chance to go to any music festival ever, which one would it be?

I’ve been fortunate enough to play at a few but I’m really looking forward to going back to Rock Werchter in Belgium! Such a good festival for rock/pop/indie music!

What’s your top tip for people planning their event?

Plan ahead, book your entertainment early, and delegate tasks before the day and more importantly ON the day. It’s likely (in my experience at least) that not everything will keep to time or as planned, so having people to liaise with the venue staff and manage your guests and timings for you will leave you to enjoy the day – which is precisely what it’s about!

Are you a cat or dog person?

Hobbit-The-Hampster

Definitely a dog person, but I am the proud owner of a hamster called Hobbit. He’s tiny with massive feet and seems to feel his sole purpose in life is to escape.

James O-Neil – Somerset 2020

“My wife and I researched a number of bands for our wedding and we kept coming back to Acoustic Captain. We’re so glad we decided to choose this band because they truly made our wedding reception fun and enjoyable. The dance floor was packed with our guests who have all said how good they are. We both highly recommended them. Just be prepared to have sore feet in the morning!”

Lewis Halden – Leeds 2018

“I hope you don’t mind me dropping you guys and email but I just had to send a message to say a MASSIVE thank you for an amazing evening on Friday! You guys were absolutely amazing and made the wedding the fantastic day that it was!  We are such a live music bunch and you really were the cherry on the cake! You made the set really personalised and catered for all music tastes! Everyone has commented on how brilliant you guys were and my 93 year old grandfather is still saying how brilliant you were and I have had to find him your website to play a few more of your tracks! Thanks again for all you hard work and for making the day extra special.”

Katie and Dan Crook – Essex 2019
